Why is it called the Baseball World Series when the US is the only country that competes?

Public Comments

  1. becouse americans are fucking idiots and think they are the world
  2. because they believe they rule the world
  3. such a boring question, and I'm English cue answer about how the newspaper that first sponsored it was called the world
  4. I've always wondered the same thing. It makes no sense to me .
  5. Wow so when did Toronto become a US City...hmm someone better tell Canada.
  6. Canada used to be involved, but you have a point. I would love to see some true international competition, say between the US and Japan - where baseball is pretty popular.
  7. i too agree with the first two answers .......... americans think that they are the world..........
  8. 'Cos the bloody Americans think they are the world!!!!! Thats why no-one likes them!
  9. 'cos no other country enters. In England, this game is played by schoolgirls and is called "rounders". Boys and men play cricket. The English equivalent of what the yanks call "Football" is rugby, which is kinda similar but without Kevlar body-armour.
  10. the game was originally sponsored by a newspaper called THE WORLD
  11. We are the world you jealous pussies get over it!!!!
  12. always wondered .something to do with what happend in the1800,s
  13. because players in the majpr leagues cpme from all over the world to play here.thats why
  14. Because our world is the only world that matters. So it should be called the "Our World" Series. Actually, foos, the series originated when a local newspaper called "The World" or "World News" decided to sponsor a basball competition. But it's fun to see the Idiot Brits getting all wound up over this.
  15. Because we, Americans rule the world! Ya gotta problem with that?
  16. Because the best baseball in the world is played in the US (and Canada) If the other countries had players that could compete at this level, they'd be drafted and they'd play in the US and if they were good enough they'd play in the World Series.
  17. At the time of the first World Series the American League had recently been formed to compete with the established National League. It was a fledgling operation and no one knew whether or not it would succeed. In order to help the new league a newspaper called The World sponsored a series. "World" Series.
  18. Well really all you have to do is look at the countries some of the players are coming from now.
  19. The World Series is the only true world-sporting event, where the best team plays in the best league with the best players. Unlike the European Football leagues, they have a league for each country, and elite teams in it so since they don’t all play against each other you may never actually know who the best team is. In baseball, the cream raises to the top so to speak and the best team wins. Because MLB will and does find the best players from around the world and have them play in the league, below is a list of some countries that have had players play in the World Series. Aruba, Austria, Australia, Bahamas, Colombia, Cuba, Curacao, Czechoslovakia, Dominican Republic, England, Finland, France, Germany, Holland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Nicaragua, Puerto Rico, Panama, Poland, Russia, Scotland, South Korea, South Vietnam, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Ukraine, Virgin Island, Venezuela, and Wales just to name a few
  20. as far as americans are concerned there is no other world other than the one within their own borders.
  21. in the immortal words of metallica...cause nothing else matters
  22. Why doe the Miss Universe Contest only feature women from Earth? Same diffference.
  23. A newspaper originally sponsored the World series yadda yadda yadda. Just a point for the "U-S-A, U-S-A" guys and gals on here, Who won the World Baseball Classic?
  24. because they think their special. the WBC should forcibly take that name.
  25. there is a team from canada....
